Our reach has extended beyond the boundaries of the Western Cape to national and International levels. In 2011, we played an important role in hosting the ‘African Footprint in Global Mental Health 2011’ World Mental Health Congress, and hosted our 17th Cape Town International Kite Festival, which celebrated ‘One Sky, One World — Mental Health for All”. Our kite theme was adopted by the S A Federation for Mental Health and our 16 ‘sister’ mental health societies as a symbol of upliftment and recovery. My approach to therapy is pragmatic and eclectic with an emphasis on depth psychology and the importance of the unconscious. I pay particular attention to the power of habits both good and bad and I insist on the interdependence of physical health with mental or emotional health. I have Gestalt Therapy, Hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in my repertoire and I use them where appropriate. I am steeped in the principles of Behaviour Modification and regard myself as a behavioural scientist. Finally I was credentialed as a Clinical Neuropsychologist by S.A.C.N.A. in 1987 and I practised as a Neuropsychologist for many years. Although I no longer practise Neuropsychology and I have let my registration lapse my knowledge of Neuropsychology ( such as it is) remains and it underpins my assessment for psychotherapy and my practice generally. I am a firm believer in lifelong learning and I spend at least two hours a week in the reading room of UCT Library perusing current journals. I also take time out of my busy week to attend lectures and workshop, devoting a minimum of 70 hours a year to this manner of keeping myself up to date. I have been doing this since I qualified as a psychologist in 1983 and the habit has become ingrained. Being an older therapist my knowledge and experience has been forged in the consulting room as well as from life generally.
