My approach to therapy is pragmatic and eclectic with an emphasis on depth psychology and the importance of the unconscious. I pay particular attention to the power of habits both good and bad and I insist on the interdependence of physical health with mental or emotional health. I have Gestalt Therapy, Hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in my repertoire and I use them where appropriate. I am steeped in the principles of Behaviour Modification and regard myself as a behavioural scientist. Finally I was credentialed as a Clinical Neuropsychologist by S.A.C.N.A. in 1987 and I practised as a Neuropsychologist for many years. Although I no longer practise Neuropsychology and I have let my registration lapse my knowledge of Neuropsychology ( such as it is) remains and it underpins my assessment for psychotherapy and my practice generally. I am a firm believer in lifelong learning and I spend at least two hours a week in the reading room of UCT Library perusing current journals. I also take time out of my busy week to attend lectures and workshop, devoting a minimum of 70 hours a year to this manner of keeping myself up to date. I have been doing this since I qualified as a psychologist in 1983 and the habit has become ingrained.
Being an older therapist my knowledge and experience has been forged in the consulting room as well as from life generally.
