The Baxter Theatre Centre provides an exciting forum for the celebration of life which is the essence of live theatre, music and dance. It is one of the major live theatre venues in Cape Town and has always been at the forefront of the performing arts both as a popular venue and as a leading producer. The Baxter Theatre Centre at the University of Cape Town endeavours to present and host the best of South African performing arts. The objective is to reflect the cultures of all the people of South Africa on our stages and in our galleries. The Baxter Theatre strives to present cutting-edge and major works from South Africa and masterpieces from the international repertoire. Since its opening in 1977 the complex has continued to provide a stage for all types of professional entertainment - music, drama, ballet, opera and intimate theatre. Even through the difficult years of racial segregation its doors remained open to everyone and it thrived, drawing on indigenous talent and creating a uniquely South African theatre tradition.

However, Handspring had always felt the challenge of developing an adult audience for the theatre of puppets and therefore began at night to workshop plays for adults. The first step in this unmarked territory was Episodes of an Easter Rising in 1985, performed in Cape Town, Grahamstown and Johannesburg. They were astonished and delighted by the strong support the production received from adult audiences and the press. This set the arc for all their future theatre work. Exposure to international theatre for puppets at the 7th international Festival of Puppet Theatre in Charleville-Mezzieres in 1985 increased their resolve to work for adults. Their first international success came in 1991 with Starbrites directed by Barney Simon, which toured to Europe and had a London season. In '92 they began work with the artist, William Kentridge. Their first collaboration, Woyzeck on the Highveld won many awards in South Africa and was highly acclaimed at festivals around the world. Since then, the company has collaborated with Kentridge on several other multi-media productions. The rich theatre life that existed in Johannesburg in the late eighties and nineties gave Handspring many opportunities to work with top South African directors. Each provoked new and unexpected developments in the way they made and worked with puppets. However, some of the changes stemmed from the performers' interaction with the materials and the demands of the performance. For rod manipulators like Handspring, the weight of the puppet was an important criterion. During the period of the children's plays this problem was solved largely through the use of polystyrene covered in layers of paper. However, Adrian (the master puppeteer and puppet maker) always found this to be an unsympathetic material.

Viv Pullin started as a student dance teacher at the age of 16, in the Pinelands North Primary School, along side the then resident teacher, Viviene. In between teaching and dancing professionally, Viv also did a Degree in Radiography and became affectionately know as the dancing Radiographer. However Viv’s passion for dance stayed with her, and 35 years ago, the Viv Pullin School of Dance was born. In 1977, Viv married an italian and started a studio in Italy which she ran very successfully for 6 years in the town of Molfetta and Trani. In 1982 Viv returned to Cape Town and the Viv Pullin School of Dance reopened in the Congregational Church Hall, in Pinelands. The studio had about 150 pupils and offered modern and dance fitness classes. Jen Stretch joined the Viv Pullin School of Dance in 1990, and quickly became Viv’s right hand lady, the time she has put into teaching and the morning dance classes has been invaluable. To add to this, Jen has become one of the best costume designers in Cape Town and also runs the very successful Rondebosch branch of The Dance Co. We also offer the Dance Fitness Club which caters for all who enjoy exercise in dance form. The Dance Co is a studio that offers dance, movement and fitness to all, from 4 years of age to 60 years old.
