The house is for the exclusive use of guests, the owners live in a cottage on the property. The boundary hedges are home to a variety of bird species and the secretive Burchell's Coucal can often be heard skulking in the abundant undergrowth, its call reminiscent if a bubbling brook. Cape White Eyes and Sun Birds festoon the Cape Fuchsia trees as they greedily drink the sweet nectar from the tubular flowers or munch away at the dark berries.

The Cloete family bought the estate in 1850. They made wine and farmed export fruit. The first Cloete, Jacob Cloete(n), a mercenary from Cologne, sailed to South Africa with Jan van Riebeeck. The family prospered and various members, at one time or other, owned many of the important Cape Dutch estates, including Groot Constantia. During the 1960’s Sandy Bairnsfather Cloete, was forced to sell off most of the land because of encroaching urbanization. He converted the Manor House and certain other buildings into a country house hotel. The present owners, Nicky and Dudley Cloete-Hopkins, have reacquired certain adjacent properties, formerly part of the farm, and restored and converted the cellars, stables and coach house into offices. The buildings now stand on 16 acres. Alphen’s great square was declared a National Monument in 1973.

Satellite DSTV and private PVR usage are also provided. The kitchenette has modern appliances, oven, microwave, hob, toaster, kettle and up-market cutlery and crockery. There is a sparkling pool situated in front of the cottage which is large enough to swim lengths. Loungers are provided with comfortable cushions so as to ensure summer and winter relaxation by the pool. Braai / Barbeque facilities are available as is an outside patio table which seats eight people to enjoy summer meals. You will have your own private entrance with electronic gate and remotes as well as ample parking space for visitors. Top security is ensured with an alarm system insitu, panic buttons, burglar bars on all the windows, and 24 hour ADT armed response vehicle protection, as well as a mini safe to store all valuable possessions. There is also an intercom to the main house for prompt and efficient communication. The cottage is serviced daily and there are laundry and dry cleaning services available. Service times are flexible to suit guest¿s needs.
