Although you might hold insurance cover against certain perils on items or property insured, it always remains the responsibility of the insured to manage his risk responsible. Irresponsible risk management could lead to your insurer repudiating your claim and even cancel your policy.
Always disclose all relevant information to your broker or insurer. The more information you as the client can supply the better the insurer or underwriter can determine the risk factor and make a choice. Should your insurer find out later you have withheld information that might have impacted their decision, they might repudiate your claim and cancel your policy.
When you leave your vehicle unattended, make sure all items of high value is not visible from the outside. Hide high risk/value items e.g cameras, laptops, cellphones etc.
Obtain valuation certificates on jewelry at least every two years
Always keep proof of purchase on specified articles as well as taking photos and storing these separately in a safe place
Write serial numbers of high risk/value items e.g television sets, music centres etc down, take photos and keep separately. This will help you & the insurer in the event of a claim as well as the South African Police Service in identifying the items should they be recovered.http://www.vdwbrokers.co.za/2143.html
