Spring has finally arrived at the lodge and although we won’t get rain for a few months yet the Knob Thorns are in full blossom and many bird are returning from the northern regions.
From the 20th to 28th September the Magoebaskloof Spring Festival is on as is “Rocking for Rhinos” 26th to 28th September an all day show with great music and stall to support the organisation helping stop poaching of Rhinos. These are yearly events. Bookings for Rocking for Rhino; tickets at Computicket.
We have a resident breeding pair of Eagles who are back and we wait with bated breath for them to start sprucing up their nest in a nearby tree. This year we are hoping to identify them and if anyone that can positively recognise the breed we will offer them a bottle of wine! So you twitchers come and spend time birding and enjoying a possible free bottle of great South African Wine along with Ann’s great Country Bisto Cuisine!
Our Ostrich recently had a clutch of chicks. Unfortunately two seemed to think they could walk on water and drowned in the pond. The parents are young and possibly not as aware as an older pair. Their first clutch of eggs were eaten by either a Monitor Lizard or Jackal; probably after they both left the nest unguarded.
Love is in the air and all the antelope are mating and the ladies are looking quite fat! We are looking at a bumper birthing time this summer.
Fighting poacher is an on going thing, andy help with this would be most appreciated, free accommodation at a barter.
Well that's all for now fellow bush lovers. Hope to see you all in the near future at the lodge.
Regards Sue.
