The name De La Salle comes from the surname of the founder of the Congregation, Saint John Baptist De La Salle, a French priest who lived from 1651 to 1719. He founded the congregation to help the poor children of France. In spite of many requests from several sources, the Brothers have always insisted that they do not become priests, in order that they may be able to devote all their energies and interest to the work of the school. Currently, the Brothers have about 1300 schools throughout the world. The school is Catholic and the atmosphere and ethos of the school are Catholic. However, non-Catholic students are welcome when there are vacancies available. All pupils are required to attend religion classes during the school day. It should be clearly understood that no attempt is made to interfere with the freedom of conscience and religion of any pupil. Attendance at Catholic religious services during the school day is optional for all non-Catholic pupils. There are two or three special school occasions during the year when all pupils are expected to attend Catholic school celebrations.
