Review about Bright Minds, Brackenfell
13 October 2026
Our experience with Bright Minds Academy in Brackenfell has been extremely disappointing and distressing, especially as parents who were specifically looking for an environment that could accommodate our son's additional learning needs.
Before enrolling our son, we made his needs and challenges clear. His previous tutor, had already explained his background to the new teacher and we also shared WhatsApp messages and voice notes detailing his circumstances, including his ADHD-related challenges and speech difficulties linked to a tongue-tie. We did not hide anything. We were transparent from the beginning because we wanted to ensure that our son would receive the support he needed.
We were led to believe that he would receive additional individual attention, support and revision of his Term 1 work. Unfortunately, what we experienced did not align with our expectations.
When we reviewed his report, books and assessments, we were deeply concerned about his academic progress, including a reported 28% in Mathematics, incomplete work and the apparent lack of evidence of the additional support we had expected and that we were told.
What disappointed us most was the lack of communication. His father collected him from school daily, yet we received no messages from his teacher raising concerns that he was refusing to cooperate, complete his work or participate in assessments. If these were ongoing problems, why were we not informed at the time? Why were these concerns not discussed with us while there was still an opportunity to address them?
Only after the situation escalated were explanations provided about the way learning and support had supposedly taken place. We wanted clear, tangible evidence of the work completed, the support given and our son's progress. As parents, we believe we have every right to ask these questions when we entrust a school with our child's education.
We were also disappointed by the subsequent communication suggesting that we consult an educational specialist or neurological paediatrician, without providing specific contact details to assist us.
Ultimately, we made the difficult decision to withdraw our son. This was not a decision we took lightly. Finding the right educational environment for a child who needs additional support is already emotionally challenging, and this experience added unnecessary stress and uncertainty to our family.
We subsequently requested a refund of R4,500 for October and escalated our concerns because we did not feel that the matter had been satisfactorily resolved.
Our biggest concern is not simply that our son was struggling academically. It is that we were transparent about his needs from the beginning, expected appropriate support and communication, and were left questioning whether he had received the assistance we believed had been agreed upon.
Every child deserves to be treated as an individual, and parents deserve honest communication, accountability and clear evidence of their child's progress.
I would strongly encourage other parents, particularly those seeking additional learning support for their children, to ask detailed questions about the actual support provided, how progress is documented and how concerns are communicated to parents before making a decision.
This experience has left us deeply disappointed and has affected our trust in this tutoring centre. I would not recommend sadly.
