This peaceful area of the Green Kalahari, situated 40 km from Upington in the Northern Cape, is rich in historic value and surrounded by natural beauty. Situated in a lush valley it consists of some 120 islands all of which are inhabited. The origin of the town’s name meaning “Big Eye” is a disputed subject and two possible explanations are favored. Firstly it is believed to sprout from the permanent spring situated near the Roman Catholic Church or secondly due to the magnificent view from atop “Tierberg” over the surrounding area. The history surrounding Keimoes is a rich and somewhat colorful one, it is in this maze of islands that the Koranna Chiefs Klaas Lukas and Piet Rooi hid 10 000 stolen livestock during the 19th century. The first water channels were completed in 1883 and rapid growth and agricultural development of the settlement followed.
