The Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA) was founded on 4 April 1929 as the South African National Council for the Deaf. After the transition to democracy in 1994, the organisation experienced positive transformation and the name change signaled the move from being an organisation for the Deaf to an organisation of the Deaf.
