Meyer became a professional painter in 1972. Since then he has travelled extensively, painting landscapes from Nevada to Norway. He has exhibited consistently in the United States, Europe and South Africa, developing an international profile that few South African artists have achieved. Over the years he has become a court painter to the rich and powerful, and his subjects range from Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk, to renowned concert pianist Vladimir Horowitz. Since the early 1990's Meyer has concentrated almost exclusively on what he calls the narrative genre - enigmatic figures caught in emotional ambiguities - representing a new direction to his art.

Central to the tradition of South African painting is the abiding love of the land. Early Cape painters were 'reporters' who described the topography, flora and fauna of this fascinating land, a conservative approach which is still favoured by the gallery's clients today. Recently the emergence of the vibrant street art has added an essentially African character to the work on display.

AVA achieves this goal in several ways. Firstly, AVA hosts exhibitions which change every four weeks. This means that our space is never without an exhibition. An artist does not need to be a member of AVA to hold an exhibition here. All work exhibited goes through a selection procedure. AVA has a selection panel who meet every two months. Any artist who wishes to exhibit at AVA must bring in works on the day of the selection meeting for the panel to review. Their decision is made by majority vote. No feedback is given and their decision is final. It should be noted that being a member of AVA does not guarantee an artist an exhibition here. As the gallery space is divided into four sections, four exhibitions can be held simultaneously and these four shows all share one opening function. An exhibition at AVA comes with expenses. We try our best to keep these costs down by allowing the four exhibitors to share certain costs. However, the cost of gallery rental and invitations is not shared, but is borne by the individual artists. AVA exhibition expenses are among the lowest in Cape Town and our commission is the standard one third on all sales. On being accepted by the selection panel for an exhibition at AVA, the artist should enquire from the gallery staff as to the exhibition expenses that he/she will incur. The artist will then be required to enter into a contract with AVA re his/her exhibition. The AVA’s artreach fund is administered by a separate sub-committee of AVA, known as the Artreach committee. The purpose of AVA’s Artreach fund is to assist visual artists with their art-related needs. Finally, the AVA gallery director, as a result of a large workload, can only be consulted by appointment. It should not be assumed that the director will be available immediately for the benefit of the public. As in most professions, appointments guarantee personal attention, which should otherwise not be taken for granted.

He was schooled in Kwa-Zulu Natal and later completed an IMM, the internationally recognised Marketing and Management qualification. In June 2001, Christopher was employed at the Everard Read Gallery in Cape Town, an experience which proved invaluable to him. While working at this prestigious gallery he developed an eye for contemporary South African art and the intricacies of it. Through this he developed and learnt the art of sustaining and developing relationships with artists and local and international clients. In January 2007, Christopher was approached by Sotheby's Cape Town, South Africa, to run their paintings division. He worked on the Kahn auction where record sales of 38 million rand was reached, including the sale of Irma Stern's work entitled "The Indian Woman" for R6.6 million. During his time with Sotheby's, Christopher furthered his skills in art valuation and diversified his knowledge by working with South African masters. Christopher's passion and knowledge of South African artists, both contemporary and masters, has resulted in him opening up his own art gallery. The gallery is based in town, on the corner of Church and Loop St, in an old Victorian building built in the 1890's. He offers a wide selection of South Africa's premium artists to his clientele. His approach is to source masters and contemporary art based on the needs of his clients and he prizes himself at the quality and standard of the work he specialises in.
