The important role of agriculture in the economy of the Eastern Cape compelled the attendees of a meeting on 29 November 1831 in Cape Town to establish the Cape of Good Hope Agricultural Society. The main objective of this society was to support the sustainability of all sectors of agriculture in the Western Cape. The Society supports viable show societies in the Western and Northern Cape, that are members of the Society, through performance-based funds according to a clearly defined grading system to ensure the survival of country shows.
