Cardio might be the first rule when faced with a Zombie apocalypse...
...but it’s not something that you usually associate with a climbing work-out. The recent arrival of the Treadwall to Southern Rock has probably highlighted for most of us how much we are lacking in this aspect of our training. And for those of you who have yet to test it out (what are you waiting for?!) you will certainly find out within a few minutes what I am talking about.
I’ll be straight with you – when I first heard the Treadwall was coming to the gym I mentally rolled my eyes. Ser-E-yas? A treadwall? It sounds like a gimmick. But I went about arranging it’s collection from Cape Town where it had previously stood in a Camp and Climb store.
I wasn’t around when it arrived but by the time I got to see it a few days later it had already attracted quite a bit of attention. “I’ll wager that wall has seen more action tonight than it saw in it’s entire time at Camp and Climb” was the musing heard the other night.
At 6 feet high it is pretty hard to miss as you walk through the door. I don’t think there has been a single customer through that gym door in the last week who has not asked questions/ogled/test driven this giant plaything. And as friendly a toy as it looks, even those with legendary endurance will be tested by it.
“The cross has come off. I'm sure of it!” Roger yelped as he searched for the marker that told him he had made it through another lap. He was experiencing what others already had – one rotation is further and pumpier than you banked on.
As for my own little wager - I’ll bet the treadwall had a lot to do with my favourite quote from the weekend: “Mom, we HAVE to come here often........PLEASE. This place is awesome!”
