Glass Block Detail

As a young boy of 7, my father once took me to see a glass building in Johannesburg - the entire ground floor was encased with glass walls - only showing the central support core.  Nice building - but something else caught my attention.

In the sidewalk was a panel of Glass Blocks - I was very intrigued and asked my all knowing father about it.  He explained that is was done to direct sunlight into the basement below.

In most of my buildings today – I try to incorporate this very detail – with an added advantage.  I place a soft floodlight above the Glass Block Panel – in order for the shadows and light to dance in the room below whenever it rains...
