The Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA) was founded on 4 April 1929 as the South African National Council for the Deaf. After the transition to democracy in 1994, the organisation experienced positive transformation and the name change signaled the move from being an organisation for the Deaf to an organisation of the Deaf. DeafSA’s mission is to preserve, protect and promote the civil, human and linguistic rights of Deaf, Deafblind, Hard of hearing and deafened people in South Africa.

The Cities Network has established a Secretariat based on the 16th Floor, Visitors and Information Center, Johannesburg Metropolitan Council.
