A Unique Solution to a Unique Problem: Custom Driveway Gate
At Inventus Designs, we pride ourselves on our ability to meet the unique needs of our clients. Recently, we were approached by a customer with a distinct challenge: to design and manufacture a custom driveway gate for a property with a driveway that drops from the street to the house with a steep incline. This presented a clear deviation from the standard gate systems available in the market, and we were eager to rise to the occasion.

Understanding the Customer's Requirements
The client’s property features a driveway with a steep incline, making traditional gate systems unsuitable. Additionally, the customer’s plans for extending the house meant that a standard straight rail gate would not suffice. Moreover, past experiences with motorized gates had led to complications, prompting the need for a different approach. With these requirements in mind, our team set out to devise a solution that would not only meet the customer’s needs but also exceed their expectations.

The cost of driveway gates in South Africa can vary greatly depending on several factors. These factors include the type of gate, its size, design, material, and whether it’s motorised or not. On average, installing a driveway gate can cost anywhere from R15,000 to over R40,000. This was also on the mind of our customer.

Development of Ideas
In the world of engineering, the development of ideas is a crucial process. It involves identifying a problem, brainstorming solutions, and then refining these solutions until a viable product or system is created. In the case of our custom driveway gate, the development of ideas was a journey that began with a unique problem and ended with an innovative solution.

The design process began with a comprehensive analysis of the property’s layout and the customer’s specific needs. This involved thorough measurements and assessments to ensure that the final design would seamlessly integrate with the existing infrastructure and accommodate future expansions.

The problem was clear: a traditional gate system would not work for our customer’s unique driveway. The brainstorming process involved considering various gate designs and mechanisms. The refinement process involved fine-tuning the design of the gate, selecting the right materials, and ensuring the gate would operate smoothly despite the steep incline of the driveway.

The Solution That Ticked the Boxes
By applying thorough engineering principles, the result was a gate that opens and closes with a 90-degree bend that when retracting from the driveway it would make a 90 degree turn and move parallel to the boundary wall.

This design made use of segmented panels fixed together by custom hinges as well as a rail support structure that negated the incline concern.

The principle of kinematics was essential in designing the movement of the gate. The gate needed to open and close with a 90-degree bend, which required a deep understanding of the motion of objects.

Applying Engineering Design Principles
In the creation of a custom driveway gate, several crucial mechanical engineering principles were employed to ensure a successful outcome. These principles not only guided the design and manufacturing process but also underscored the expertise and skill of the team at Inventus Designs.

The principle of mechanics played a pivotal role in understanding how the gate would function under varying forces. Factors such as gravity on the steep incline, the forces exerted by the gate motor, the pressures experienced during operation and wind resistance were all carefully considered. Material science principles were essential in the selection of durable materials capable of withstanding the exerted forces, particularly for the custom hinges and rail support structure.

Our team then leveraged advanced modelling and simulation techniques to visualize the proposed gate design in the context of the property, allowing us to fine-tune the details before fabrication began. Throughout this process, our focus remained on ensuring the reliability, durability, and seamless operation of the custom gate.

Engineering Principles Met Real-World Challenges
By collaborating closely with the customer and leveraging our design process system, we were able to surpass expectations and provide a custom driveway gate that not only met the specific requirements of the property but also offered a reliable, efficient, and elegant solution.

The project is in its manfucaturing stage with inital cost estimates being at R18,000.00.
