We receive no government funding and are reliant on the community we serve for operating costs. Compassion costs nothing, but pet food, veterinary equipment and supplies, vehicles for transporting rescued animals, etc does. The Durban & Coast SPCA's mission is to improve the welfare of, and to prevent cruelty to, all animals in the Greater Durban Area. We achieve this by: responding to reports of cruelty, rescuing animals in distress and prosecuting those guilty of cruelty; sheltering strays and unwanted dogs and cats until they are claimed by their owners or new owners can be found for them; treating sick and injured rescued animals; providing subsidised veterinary services for pets of underprivileged and unemployed people, and pensioners; educating children and others with regard to the basic rights of animals, responsible pet ownership; offering affordable boarding for dogs while their owners are away on holiday; promoting a society where respect and concern for all living creatures is accepted as the norm.

We have an active team of very dedicated Bereavement Counsellors who are available to give help and counselling to the families of Hospice patients for up to a year after the death of the patient. Our Outreach Programme which started in 1997 with a handful of patients now has approximately 400 patients (mostly HIV/Aids). The Outreach patients are looked after by 4 fulltime Nursing Sisters and 21 Community Workers. The patients are visited and nursed in their own homes, and we have a drop-in centre in Mpophomeni and Lidgetton which form central points in the rural areas from where ambulant patients may collect their medicines and food parcels. Weekly clinics for both adult patients and children are also held at each drop-in centre.
