Wallpaper
What is hot and happening on the wall front.
Home decorating is becoming bigger and better year on year. We are spoilt for choice with local and international design being more affordable and accessible. But the trick is, when to stop and how to decorate sensibly in a way that good pieces last and smaller items can be changed on a whim to create a new look.
The current interior trend combines a mixture of nostalgia and a more contemporary minimalist designer look. The old and the new are being mixed together with stunning effect, and giving each space a more unique and reflective feel. Imagine a weather beaten old table that has supported years of laughter and good food, surrounded by contemporary white chairs.
The trick to interior design is to keep it simple. Use scatter cushions or bright vases to add colour and change the look or the season of a room, but keep your large items simple in design and neutral in colour.
For winter colours, think of warm fires, butternut soup and red wine and use those colours to bring warmth into your house, on the opposite scale, for summer colours, imagine the sun, the beach, and freshly cut green grass and add those colours to add cheer and brightness.
Wallpaper is huge and will be a top trend for the foreseeable future as one wall transforms a room and gives it the wow factor. The latest designs have so much to offer in terms of design, texture, colour and versatility that there is something for everyone. Forget little flowers that your granny had in her bathroom, and is probably still trying to take off - Wallpaper today is big, bold and easily removable.
There are a number of different wall coverings available, textured wallpaper includes grasscloth, pearl wallpaper whereby tiny little pearls are stuck on the paper for a ‘sandart’ effect, paintable wallpaper which comes in many designs and can be painted any colour, and some even have Swarovski crystals!
Vinyl coated wallpapers are also fantastic for kitchens and bathrooms as they can be wiped down and cleaned, and come in thousands of designs.
Wallpaper can also be printed especially for you, popular at the moment, is just doing a whole feature wall. A special idea is to have your wedding photo made up for your bedroom, or your favourite holiday beach snap blown up for a bathroom or a Manhattan skyline for your TV room.
A cheaper option to decorating your walls is through specially manufactured wall stickers, these are thick vinyl that can be removed without damaging the wall or your sticker, perfect for children’s rooms or rented houses or for a quick fix.
Your imagination is the only thing from preventing you from having a unique designer home.
Installing wallpaper can be difficult and is best left to the professionals!
