The Meaning of Colour to an Interior Decorator
Are you in the throws of decorating a new room/nursery/children’s bedroom and stuck on what colours to choose?
Colour has such a profound effect on human nature and attitudes, so it’s worth taking into consideration what colour actually means.
• Orange brings a family together, stills emotions of anger and lifts depression
• Red creates energy and encourages conversation, it’s great for a dining room, but not for a child’s bedroom if you want them to sleep!
• Pink, a calming colour if light, but dark pink symbolises passion and energy
• Green encourages balance and self control, it also creates a sense of calm
• Yellow is a happy cheerful colour that encourages openness and stimulation, it’s used a lot in babies rooms, but may be too overbearing for them as it’s been proved that babies cry more in a yellow room
• Blue is a fantastic colour for people who suffer from headaches, it also stimulates children’s brains. Blue in nature is a calm, serene colour.
• Greys can create indecision by activating the brain, but also stimulates creativity. A grey room is a great colour to paint or write in, or in an office as it’s neutral but stimulating.
• Brown gives focus and a feeling of balance, in symbolises value and trust – great for psychologists and lawyers!
• Black is a severe colour that can cause depression if used in isolation
• Neutral colours create a neutral space, it’s always advisable to add a dash of colour to bring a space to life.
• Red and Orange are both positive warm colours, but used together can cause stress, so be careful of colour combinations.
Colour is the quickest and easiest thing to change in a room, and gives the most reward. Painting an old cupboard or recovering scatter cushions cost very little, yet can update a room in hours.
