Description
The Gauteng Fund is an infrastructure expansion fund established by the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) to meet the development objectives of the Province as outlined in the Gauteng Growth and Development Strategy. The fund is geared toward poverty alleviation, job creation and strategic infrastructure development in the Province. In conjunction with a commitment by the GPG to invest an amount of R500 million into the fund as seed capital, the fund will raise additional capital to meet its objectives by engaging both local and international capital markets. The capital generated by the fund will be channeled to develop key infrastructure within the telecommunications, healthcare, transport and tourism sectors and in so doing, alleviate poverty and unemployment and stimulate economic growth. Fittingly, the fund is headed by Paul Mashatile, the MEC of Finance and Economic Development.

The fund will function as a facilitator of funds generated from national and international capital markets toward Provincial infrastructure development, offering investors the opportunity to contribute substantially toward the economy, gain a good return on their investment, as well as access profitable development projects that would ordinarily have been restricted to the domain of the GPG. This strategic partnership between the GPG and capital investors is designed to accelerate service delivery and advance the objectives of the Gauteng Growth and Development Strategy.
The Gauteng Fund Project Office was established to address the funds administrative needs. The GPG submit large-scale infrastructure projects to the office, at which point it is the offices role to investigate these projects according to their compliance with BBBEE regulations, the Gauteng Growth and Development Strategy and their sustainable viability. This ensures the delivery of feasible infrastructure development in the Province and that investors interests are met.
