Sumo Coal, Johannesburg

Sumo Coal (Pty) Ltd, an established South African company, has been operating in the coal industry since its inception in 1995. The company has established a number of subsidiaries in drilling and exploration, coal mining, beneficiating and marketing companies. Sumo owns a coal preparation plant of which operations and maintenance work has been outsourced to E+PC Metallurgical Operations (A Division of E+PC Engineering & Projects Company).

Over the years, the company has owned and managed its own operations. Through the years Sumo has supplied coal into the domestic market, mostly to meet Eskom’s ever-growing demand for steam coal. Overseas countries are supplied with export grade coal via the ports of Maputo, Durban and Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

The company has coal portfolio in South Africa with an operating mine in Middleburg, Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The mine is situated in the known Highveld coalfield. Sumo has been in the area since inception and through the years builds its portfolio around the area to achieve economies of scale. There is in the close proximity of the mine, two rail sidings namely Rietkuil and Pan in use for trains to Maputo, Durban and Richards Bay.

As part of growth Sumo Coal has successfully formed entities to actively operate independently to optimize value throughout mining value chain. All its subsidiaries are involved in the building of Sumo into a global mining resources company.

Nonya Mining, a subsidiary of Sumo, is a drilling and exploration entity with a team of staff dedicated for such activities. As the company constantly explore for coal, the company provides that value-add being in-house. Despite being a drilling company for Sumo, sometimes Nonya is contracted by external companies who have interest in their services.

Londani Coal is a mining subsidiary of Sumo Coal responsible for mine operations. Londani is based in Middleburg where they are currently mining.
