The village of Clarens, which is known as the jewel of the Eastern Free State, is situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains close to Golden Gate National Park as well as the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. With it’s tranquil village charm, breath taking views and mild climate it is the ideal getaway for the weary and those seeking inspiration- and what’s more, it’s only 3 hours away from Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Durban.

“Conventional and conservative are not words I would use to describe my art gallery” says Elsje’ Grobbelaar, owner and curator at Smudge Contemporary Art Gallery. I’ve always enjoyed looking at something unusual and modern and that’s what I look for in an artist too. Someone with tons of talent and energy, whether they’re an up-and-coming, emerging or an established artist. And that’s why I opened the first and only contemporary art galley in Clarens, with the hope of bringing these artist as well as patrons and investors of contemporary art under the same roof. Now I’m excited to bring you this website with a comprehensive collection of art ranging from edgy to down right eccentric. Enjoy.
