Paarl Rugby Club

Paarl Rugby Club was established in 1883. It is the third oldest constituted rugby club in the country and has a very proud history.

The Springbok colours originated from this club. In 1883 the first team proudly wore their green and gold outfits and only after the Springboks used the green and gold, Paarl Rugby Club changed their colours to dark and light blue.

The first rugby march in South Africa in 1870 was between Paarl and Malmesbury. It was played at Malmesbury and the Paarl team travelled by ox wagon to Malmesbury for this historic match.

Paarl Rugby Club once was a force in WP Rugby and SA Rugby, producing numerous WP players and a number of Springboks. The club also won the highest competitions in the WP on several occasions.

Many well known Springboks which Paarl Rugby Club delivered are among others, Markotter (who captained Paarl from 1899 to 1900) Louis Louw, Johnnie Bester, PK Morkel, Boy Louw, Fanie Louw, Pierre de Villiers, Chum Osche, Theuns Briers, Chum Osche, Hugo van Zyl, Tiny Neethling, Charlie CockrelL and Wynand Mans.

The club produced its last Sprinbok, Charlie Cockrell in 1970. The last player representing WP was Willam Cockrell who player for WP during 1991. And the last time that the club won a competition was during 1997.

All these wonderful achievements came to an end during the latter part of the previous millennium.

We belief that this situation can and must be turned around. Through Paarl Rugby Club the local community can help that Paarl again be a force in the world of rugby.

Paarl Rugby Club is truly and completely a multi racial club and is serving all population groups of Paarl.

Although we recognize the achievements of the past, the club also wants to fulfill its obligations in the modern era. The upgrading of our Web page is the start of a dynamic future for the club.
