Omdraaisvlei is in the malaria free Karoo, halfway between Britstown and Prieska on the N10 in the Northern Cape of South Africa.
Equidistant from both Cape Town and Johannesburg (780km), it is still closer yet to the coast (600km from George and 630km from Port Elizabeth).
Whether you wish to hike or horse ride while viewing game or to reach a particular San rock art site or the most ancient of fossil forms, stromatolites, you will revel in the space and the silence all to yourself.
Company description
For accommodation you might wish for the comfort of the farm house or the sheer indulgence of a bed in the Bush Camp at the end of the day. You might even wish to camp. It is your own safari. The choice is yours.
Although it is far from the madding crowd (some might say in the gammadoelas) it features on most maps of South Africa. Many buildings attest to a railway station that once loaded sheep and people, a hotel booked out at weekends, a police station that then kept the peace, a shop, a post office, a school and a garage during the Karoo farming boom years.
Now there is a gentler pace of life and although farming operations continue they are more organic and diverse. Here you will find organic gardens, a huge variety of poultry and bird life, beehives and horses, hammocks in the karee trees and weavers above the swimming dam.
