Description
New Africa Books (Pty) Limited is a new company formed as a result of the merger of David Philip Publishers, Spearhead Press and New Africa Educational Publishing. Prior to this merger, David Philip Publishers and New Africa Education Publishing were separate companies owned by New Africa Media, a subsidiary of New Africa Investments Limited, which owns several radio, newspaper, magazine and television production companies. Spearhead was operating as an imprint of David Philip Publishers.
David Philip Publishers was started in 1971 by David and Marie Philip in order to realise a shared vision for an indigenous, independent publisher in South Africa – one that would publish from inside the country books that would open debate and discussion, and encourage the development of South African writers in many different fields. Of the smaller publishing houses that sprouted during the 1970s and 80s, thirty years later, David Philip was one of the few still in existence. This publishing house’s achievements are summarized in the following quote taken from a recent newspaper report – "in just under 30 years of their existence as independent publishers, they have helped to change the face of local, English-language publishing from the colonial style dependencies of the large British companies like Oxford University Press and Macmillan, to quality indigenous products". David Philip is now an imprint of New Africa Books and as such will continue to build on the solid base it has built over the years.
New Africa Education Publishing was a new company formed in 2000. Now operating as New Africa Education – the third imprint of New Africa Books – it mainly concentrates on publishing for the General Education, Further Education and Higher Education markets but also publishes education titles for general trade consumption.
New Africa Books strives to be the leading African publisher – the world’s definitive gateway to African content and information and in order to achieve this New Africa Education, David Philip and Spearhead will operate as separate imprints serving their specific markets while exploiting synergies among themselves.
