The fruit has a smooth dark purple skin (called the Pericarp) with a white segmented mandarin-like flesh inside. The Pericarp (rind) and the fruit of the Mangosteen contain high levels of Polyphenols and Xanthones (both potent antioxidants).

Known as the Queen of fruits, Mangosteen contains more Xanthones (polyphenolic compounds that take place naturally in various organic materials) than any other fruit and vegetable. Scientists around the world discovered numerous medical properties from Xanthones in mangosteen as follows:

Anti-Oxidant Properties
Xanthones in Mangosteen are one of the most effective anti-oxidants found in nature. Research worldwide indicates that Xanthones in Mangosteen, have the most strength of antioxidants, 20-30 times better than any other fruit or vegetable.

Scientists who studied the properties of Xanthones in Mangosteen found that they “exhibited potent free-radical scavenging activity”. Xanthones help absorb free radicals and stop cellular damage that leads to many types of diseases.

Phytonutrient which has a high Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) property, can reduce all damages from free radicals which are the causes of cancer, heart diseases and ageing. Antioxidants, like the Xanthones found in the Mangosteen, can prevent mutation and the activation of cancer genes.

Scientists claim that two of the Mangosteen Xanthones, alpha-mangostin and gamma-mangostin, proved to be much stronger antioxidants than others that are known for their antioxidant capabilities. Gamma-mangostin, for example, was shown to have more potent antioxidant activity than even vitamin E, one of nature’s most potent antioxidants.
