Midlands Medical Centre, Pietermaritzburg

Midlands Medical Centre is a private hospital comprising 140 beds and 5 operating theatres, and is situated in the CBD of Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal. Pietermaritzburg is 80 kilometers from Durban, and just less than 500 kilometers from Johannesburg, and the Drakensberg mountains are just over an hour away.
The hospital’s facilities are used by 50 General Practitioners, 40 Specialists of all disciplines, and Dentists. In its 21 years, MMC has become known in the city for delivering excellent and cost effective healthcare to the community it serves.
The hospital was established in 1988 by a group of BEE doctors who wanted a health care facility of their own, for their own patients. The initial small group of doctor shareholders had no experience of running a hospital, but through diligence and ploughing back reserves into development, the hospital has grown from its initial 56 beds, to 74, then to 108, and now 140 beds. Today, 19 years later, the 5 founders of the hospital are still using its facilities.
MMC remains one of the few BEE owned hospitals in South Africa, and is also one of the few independently owned private hospitals left, i.e. it does not have the backing and resources of the big groups, yet still has the enviable reputation of consistently delivering excellent healthcare.
MMC also has a track record of assisting those not on medical aid. There is a comprehensive list of cash prices for common procedures, and also a discount structure, including a special discount for pensioners.
