Description
My latest body of work, 191 Entertainment, represents a sea change from my work to date, as much in the method of creation as the internal space from which I created. It
investigates my response to the “entertainment” advertised in the Classified section of our local evening newspaper, The Argus
The 28 small, intimate works in acrylic and collage on mount-board, newspaper and tissue paper, investigate how, at 51 and feeling somewhat past by “sell by” date, I deal with my own discomfort around the “entertainment” (i.e. sex for sale) delivered to my door every night. It exposes my fantasies and judgments and the way in which I choose to denigrate, snigger, sympathize, joke and whistle in the dark in order to deal with that which I find uncomfortable and threatening.
Through these works, I discover that I can only transcend disquiet if I am prepared to face it square on and without euphemism while simultaneously honouring the choice of each individual to use their life-force as they wish.
On a more universal level, I hope these works challenge viewers to review their own methods of dealing with the daily euphemisms we use to ignore reality by couching it in terms that are more comfortable to swallow, eg military murder and destruction of civilian populations = collateral damage or racial bias and favour = Apartheid/Black Economic Empowerment.
