The shipping market has evolved over the years – and is growing at a steady pace. Volumes of cargo have grown phenomenally since 1840 – with the volume today estimated to be 400 times more than that transported in 1840. In 2010, it was calculated that 1.2 tonnes of cargo was transported per person in the world per year! With such increase in tonnages, ships have evolved, from the 650 dwt bulker John Bowes in 1852, to the 300 000 dwt bulkers available in today’s market. Container vessels have gone from a capacity of 2 280gt in 1865, to the Emma Maersk of 170 000gt today.
