Volunteer with children and animals in Africa!

DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage is a registered non-profit organisation located on the outskirts of the world famous Kruger National Park in South Africa. DAKTARI provides volunteers with the unique opportunity to care for some of South Africa’s most iconic species and inspire a generation of underprivileged children to conserve their natural heritage.

DAKTARI provides supplementary environmental and life skills education to Grade 8 learners in the nearby underprivileged communities. Every Monday morning DAKTARI welcomes eight children to the camp to spend five days attending lessons and doing activities aimed at building their knowledge of the environment.
During weeks when the Grade 8 children are writing exams, local youths come to the camp from the nearby villages for the Job Hunting Program. This program focuses on giving these youths the skills they need to find a job. The lessons include CV and cover letter writing, job interview skills and internet training. The students are then given certificates at the end of the week and recommendations if requested.

DAKTARI is also a home for wild animals, the majority of which cannot be rehabilitated due to injury. DAKTARI gives them a second chance at life while they also act as educational ambassadors to the children that visit our camp.

When you volunteer at DAKTARI you have a meaningful and often life-changing experience. As a volunteer you play a vital role in the successful implementation of the education curriculum, with an emphasis on topics such as anti-poaching, wildlife, private game reserves, ecosystems and tourism.

You will spend your days experiencing life in the bush, helping the animals in need while educating the children of Africa. In the evenings you play games with the children and get involved with social talks as well as having lots of fun dancing around the bonfire with volunteers from all over the world!
