Description
Caring Hands Foundation – a Gauteng-based care project specifically geared to meeting the needs of Deaf people in the province. Gauteng, the heart of the South African economy, is home to almost 60 000 of the estimated 383 000Deaf people in the country.
Caring Hands Foundation have secured a property in Brakpan. The rationale behind this is to provide housing for deaf pensioners or young deaf seeking boarding. There are 10 rooms in e house and the house is called House Carmen. The boarding fee of R2860 pm includes 3 meals daily, clothes washing and ironing, cleaning room once a week. Caring Hands and House Carmen are both Article 21 non-profit organisations (NPO), we do fundraising for the various affilated Deaf Organisations in Gauteng who are dedicated to improving the quality of life of those who are deaf.
South Africa today is a country of opportunity, a country that is growing and becoming more and more aware of the abilities and rights of disabled people. There has been a mind shift away from isolation and rejection toward joining hands and journeying together, toward empowerment and building understanding, establishing partnerships and making friends. We at Caring Hands understand this. We actively work towards helping Deaf people to become fully integrated and dignified members of society. One of the greatest frustrations of Deaf people is the communication gaps: at work, in shops and banks, everywhere hearing people are encountered. Very few hearing people have a working knowledge of SA Sign Language or even an understanding of the culture of Deaf people. Caring Hands is familiar with Deaf people’s culture and their problems, their sorrow, and we speak their language, we try to build bridges to the world of the spoken and written word. Deaf people can seek assistance from us and will not be sent from one place to another. Caring Hands’ core areas of care are Tshwane and Ekurhuleni. They extend beyond Gauteng from Rustenburg in the west to Bronkhorstspruit, from Witbank in the east to Mokopane in the far northern regions, and to the Vaal triangle in the south – indeed, the whole former Transvaal region and even the Free State. Deaf people, with their own language and culture, find their physical, social and spiritual needs met through the affiliated organisations under the Caring Hands umbrella.
A similar project at Worcester in the Western Cape is filled to capacity, and they requested us to develop a housing complex for disabled deaf here in Gauteng..
