1929 - Cape Gate Fence & Wire Works (Pty) Limited founded in Parow, Western Province by the Kaplan / Kushlick families.

1962 - Cape Gate (Pty) Limited established by the purchase of a small wire netting plant on 15 hectares in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng Province.

The Davsteel division of Cape Gate (Pty) Limited introduced two steel shredding units in 1988. This changed the face of scrap processing in South Africa, which resulted in increased capacity and full utilisation of the most advanced mini mill technology.
The shredding units are currently operated by Universal Metal Shredding Company (Pty) Limited and Universal Recycling Company (Pty) Limited.
