Description
Our passion is the youth of South Africa from all walks of life and our aim is to serve
communities, schools, churches and youth organizations by helping them to equip their young
people to reach their full potential in a multi-cultural and inter-denominational environment.
We take a relational approach and strongly believe in experiential learning.
Our heart’s desire is to see young people come to know and love Christ. God has given us hope
and when we consider what our lives looked like without that hope, we aim to help others
discover that hope for themselves.
The reason we have found camping to be such an effective vehicle for growth, is that in our
camps we combine the two most effective teaching tools: experiential learning en small groups.
Experiential learning is a teaching method where students participate in an activity, experience
emotions, frustrations, etc. and then are facilitated.

We serve kids of all ages from primary to high school as well as adult groups.
We work with all South Africans and treat people with respect and dignity.
Big Oak Adventures, a Christian company, manages Karmel and offers a full range of services at this campsite.
Our programs are tailor-made and based on Christian values.
We always make it a point to understand and address the specific needs that are important to
your group. We believe in facilitating growth through adventure and challenge! By leading
participants through a variety of activities, we enable them to learn more about themselves and
to discover important life skills and concepts such as:

Also, in a small group, the trained and committed staff of Big Oak Adventures can provide
personal attention and input to participants as they walk through their experience.
In the small group setting, participants will experience the following:
• Personal attention to individual needs
• Group discussions to talk about what they have experienced in an activity
• Cabin reflections each night to review the day and what they learned • Challenging questions and time for thoughtful discussion
• Campfire discussions (the participants prepare their own meals over an open fire or
gas stoves)
• Security and confidence to push themselves and attempt new challenges in a safe
emotional environment
At Big Oak Adventures, we believe in adventure, getting dirty, and urging kids beyond their comfort zones, while safety remains number one. Our staff is highly experienced and has been trained according to MDT standards in the areas of mountain walking, climbing, and abseiling.
