Description
The Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) has been established to assist in increasing the global competitiveness of the South African automotive industry to world-class levels by addressing specific challenges. It works in partnership with business, Local, Provincial and National Government, Tertiary and Further Education Institutions and other national and international organisations to provide technical services to the automotive industry across all tiers of suppliers and assemblers. As a project-driven organisation with a focus on technical excellence and delivery, the AIDC provides accessible and affordable world-class services in the areas of skills development and training, supply chain development and supplier development. The AIDC’s activities and presence continue to be focused in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, where ongoing support from Provincial and Local Governments has resulted in significant collaborative projects aimed at supporting the local industry.
The automotive industry will need to significantly improve its electricity management to remain competitive. This was the message heard by delegates at the "Lean to Green Workshop" hosted by the AIDC and Eskom last week.
Addressing close to 100 manufacturers at the workshop, AIDC Supplier Development Manager, Lance Schultz said that load shedding would likely be re-introduced by Eskom in the late part of the year as current projections indicated that energy supply would lag demand then.
The Automotive Industry Development Centre says more than 1000 automotive industry workers in the Metro will be HIV tested before the end of the year.
AWiSA HIV/AIDS expert, Martin Weihs, deployed at the AIDC, said a comprehensive workplace programme was being implemented at the factories of three prominent automotive component manufacturers namely Borbet, Spicer Axle and Federal Mogul.
