Post- Op Instructions after Dental extraction
1. After a tooth extraction, it is important for a stable blood clot to form in order stop the bleeding and begin the natural healing process. In order to assist this process, often we may place a dissolvable material in the extraction area to assist with this clotting; it is recommended that you firmly bite on a gauze pad we place in the extraction site for 30 to 45 minutes following the procedure.
2. After the blood clot forms, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot, especially for the first 24 hours. Do not smoke, drink alcohol, suck hard through a straw, rinse vigorously, or brush near the extraction site for one to two days.
3. Reduce exercise for the first 24 hours. This will keep blood pressure lower, which will reduce bleeding from the extraction site. If you have a small post-op bleed you can manage this by getting two Ceylon tea-bags wetting them thoroughly in water and then placing them in the extraction site and biting down hard on them.
4. To reduce swelling, place an ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas in the area. Swelling usually should subside after 48 hours.
5. To minimize/manage post op pain, take medications such as Mypradol or Parasetamol. In some cases, stronger prescription pain medications may be prescribed. Please take only as prescribed, and do not drive or operate machinery if taking narcotic medications. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time, even if signs and symptoms of infection are gone.
6. After 24 hours, you may gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water three times a day (one teaspoon of salt in one cup of warm water, rinse-swish-spit). Rinsing after meals will help in preventing food from accumulating in the extraction site. Avoid eating on the side of the mouth where the extraction has happened, try and eat on the opposite side of the mouth.
7. Drink lots of fluids, and eat soft food on the opposite side from the extraction site. Avoid alcoholic beverages and hot or spicy foods. You may resume normal eating as soon as you are comfortable.
8. If dissolving sutures (stitches) were placed they will usually fall out in 7-10 days post-op, if silk sutures were placed please they will be removed at the follow-up appointment.
9. Please contact us immediately on 011 463 8884/ 072 243 1068 if you have heavy uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling after two to three days, or a reaction to the medications prescribed.
