The dumpy level instrument is set upon a tripod and, either accurately or roughly set to a levelled condition. The staff and autolevel are used to transfer and/or gather levels during building construction or site surveys. The need to set the autolevel truely level is reduced by the compensating swinging prism. This reduces the need to set the instrument truly level.
