The Need for training during a recession

13 March 2013

Working in the training industry is very rewarding. Not only do trainers work good hours and meet new people on a daily paces, we get to watch how the delegates improve their skills and grow as successful individuals. We very literally stand by and not only watch but assist in the growth of revenue and productivity, be it for one person or a multinational company, yet I still find that many fail to see the importance of attending Training of any kind.

“The country is going through a recession and so we cannot afford Training”

Personally I find the biggest excuse used for not attending training to be the very reason why it is so important. Yes, most, if not all business’s are feeling the negative impact of the recession in South Africa. Many are being retrenched with those left behind suddenly being over worked and under paid. Many lack the skills needed to completely fulfil their roles in the work place and then spend time getting assistance from others or just perform their duties in a manner that is sub standard… and let’s be honest now, no business, regardless of financial status or size, can afford to have incompetent employee’s on their payroll.

Individual employee’s need to be productive and capable in order for a business to be successful. Language and Administrative abilities need to high. Who here enjoys speaking to someone who doesn’t understand you or worse yet, understands you, but does not have the ability to assist you because he/she is under skilled in the work force?  Being up skilled gives you the opportunity to grow and fill the shoes of those who know.

“There is no time”

Yes, time is precious. I agree, but so much time is wasted in tasks that need to be re-done, or tasks take hours to complete because you need to sit and “figure it out”.

Training may cause you to be away from the office for a day but by learning how to optimally utilize or your time or learning the correct way to use your daily soft ware can save you hours.

It’s simple really; training improves productivity but if you still don’t believe that training is important, here are a few other points that may just lead to you booking that much needed course today!

·         Training provides you with the ability to develop your Human Resources. It gives employees the opportunity to better achieve organizational and personal goals, leading to a greater sense of pride and accomplishment within the work place thus in return improving the overall group morale and team spirit.
·         Training creates a healthy working environment. It helps in improving the health and safety of the environment, preventing absenteeism, injuries (in some cases) as well as obsolescence.
·         Training helps in creating a better corporate image which in return leads to improved profitability.
·         Training leads to more effective decision making and problem solving. It helps in understanding and carrying out policies and procedures. It very obviously develops leadership skills, motivation, loyalty, better attitudes, and other aspects that successful workers and managers usually display.
