17 Construction safety tips that will help keep you and your construction team safe.

1. If you don't know ask

Not sure on what to do? Or don’t know if or how you can perform the task safely? The best practice is to ask. Speak to your supervisor or project manager for guidance and make sure that you follow all safety precautions. Ensure that you have all the correct equipment to safely perform the task at hand. If you do not know how to do something ask for an example as to how it is done.

2. Equipment matters. Ensure you use the correct equipment and that equipment is checked regularly.

Before starting a job, make sure you are using the correct equipment and that you do a proper check for faults before commencing with the job at hand. Not only will it ensure your safety and the safety of others, but use of the correct equipment will ensure the job gets done quicker and that the quality and workmanship is better as well. Visually check your equipment before proceeding with a job. Make sure automatic tools are correctly fitted and moving parts are tightened correctly.

3. Report faulty tools and equipment

Upon inspection of tools, if you find a faulty tool report it immediately. Whatever tools or equipment is used needs to be reported if any faults are found.  This can not only keep you from danger but the act of simply reporting faulty tools or equipment can potentially keep your colleges from injury.

4. Do not temper with equipment

Do not ever temper with equipment. If something is not operating correctly or looks off. Refer to tip number 3. Do not tamper with equipment. Faulty equipment needs to be repaired, maintained or replaced by the persons in charge of the equipment and tools. Leave the tampering to those who know what they’re doing. For repairs to tools and equipment there will be an appointed tool plan or process.

5. Never work in dangerous areas

Make sure your work area is safe. Visually inspect your work area before commencing with work.

Don’t work under crane loads

Don’t work where there is unsafe railing

Only work in elevated spaces when you have a safety harness attached correctly to a secure point.
