About
Krugersdorp (Afrikaans for Kruger's town) is a mining city in the West Rand, Gauteng Province, South Africa founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius . Following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand, a need arose for a major town in the west of the reef. The government bought part of the Paardekraal farm and named the new town after the Transvaal president, Paul Kruger. Krugersdorp no longer has a separate municipal government after it was integrated into Mogale City Local Municipality along with surrounding towns. It is now the seat of government for Mogale City.

Falling under the municipality known as Mogale City, Krugersdorp is essentially a mining town, regarded as the industrial hub of western Gauteng. Gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime are all mined in and around Krugersdorp and its history is steeped in mining annals / memoirs, which began when gold was discovered on the farm Paardekraal. Consequently there are some beautiful old buildings and churches well worth visiting. But Krugersdorp has thoroughly modernised itself. It has ultra-modern sport facilities including a sports stadium, a contemporary business centre including shopping malls and numerous smaller shops, but what draws people to Krugersdorp are the various activities close by.

Gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime are all mined in the area.

Krugersdorp has a modern business center and shopping malls alongside many smaller shops, schools, and necessary amenities. There are also have game reserves and a nearby bird sanctuary.

Krugersdorp is served by the Jack Taylor Airfield, easily accessible from Pretoria via the R28/N14 highway to Johannesburg's, international airport, the N1 highway, and Lanseria International Airport on the R511.

The nearby 1,400 hectares (3,500 acres) game reserve in the dense bush of the veld holds a large quantity of game and is one of the town's major tourist attractions. Also in close proximity are various provincial heritage sites including the Cradle of Humankind and its Sterkfontein Caves and the Wonder Cave.

Other attractions include an eco adventure park, the South African National Bird of Prey Centre and the Railway and Steam Train Museum, where steam train fanatics can revel in the 90 odd steam engine locomotives. And lastly, the Sterkfontein Caves, just 12 kilometres north of Krugersdorp, where a myriad stalagmite and stalactite formations and guided tours through the limestone structures via a huge underground lake make for an exciting visit. Some of the oldest remains of ancestral humans have been found at this World Heritage Site.

Now we are looking forward to the opening of the new Cradlestone mall close to us, apparently the biggest shopping centre in the west rand. From restaurants to curio shops will be housed in the mall
