What is a G-ratio:
A G-ratio is the abrasive wheel industry’s standard for measuring a wheels efficiency. It represents the relationship between the amount of material removed from the work piece to the amount of grinding/cutting tool wear.
Example:
A G-ratio of 1:1 = 1 part of material removed for 1 part of grinding tool lost (used)
A G-ratio of 2:1 = 2 Parts of material removed for 1 Part of grinding tool lost ( used)
How to calculate a G-ratio: - cutting off trials: the G-ratio is calculated by dividing the area of material cut by the area of wheel lost. - grinding disc trials: the G-ratio is calculated by dividing the weight of material removed from the work piece by the weight of the material lost from the disc. To do this, both the disc and the work piece are weighed before and after grinding or cutting.
You can use this to determine if you are getting the best value for money on your spend on abrasives , by factoring in the cost of the disc or wheel that you use. Other factors that needs to be considered is any time saving in completeing the task at hand.
