Radiant Underfloor Heating – An ancient practice

Radiant underfloor heating is a technology that can simply be viewed as the process of intentionally using the laws of radiant heat to transfer radiant energy from an emanating source.

As complex as that sounds, radiant heating is actually a very ancient technology!  The very earliest, traceable, reference of radiant heating, alludes that temples in ancient Rome in 350 BCE were heated in this manner.  Back then the term Hypocaust would’ve been much more familiar than our modern terms, the word derives from the Ancient Greek hypo meaning “under” and caust-, meaning “burnt” (as in caustic).  This was to become the forerunner for modern central heating.  The Hypocaust was a system of heating that produced and circulated hot air below the floor.  There was also a series of pipes in the walls that helped add heating to the room and to relay the hot air to upstairs rooms.  Used for heating hot baths and other public rooms, Hypocausts were generally only used by the wealthy in their private homes due to the costliness of the system.

Fast forward from Ancient Rome to our modern age and you will find that, while the technology is now much more refined, it is also more readily available.  Gone are the days when only the super rich could afford to add some warmth to their homes.  Indeed, radiant underfloor heating has become one of the most economical heating sources available.
